Bullying and Teeth

It’s no secret that children with decaying teeth often suffer through debilitating pain and embarrassment, robbing them of their ability to succeed in school and to enjoy normal childhood activities. But did you know crooked and “ugly” teeth are a significant cause of bullying?

A study conducted in Amman, Jordan that was published a couple of years ago in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics quantified the problem and confirmed what most of us already knew; kids with bad teeth are routinely picked on by their peers. In another study conducted in 2013 in England by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, researchers identified bad and crooked teeth as a leading cause of bullying.

It’s alarming, it’s sad and it’s mostly preventable.

Childhood dental problems are fixable whether through standard treatments, orthodontics or occasionally surgery. But we believe the key is to catch any issue before it becomes a crisis. Good dental habits start early and at UPD Dental Associates we recommend that children have their first dental visit when they turn one year of age. No, we don’t expect babies to brush and floss every day, but a child’s first birthday is the right time to identify potential problems before they get out of hand. It’s also the perfect time to establish a strong, family dental routine. Together as partners in protecting your children’s dental health, we can give your child the gift of a wonderful smile – a gift that will last a lifetime.
