University Pediatric Dentistry's Healthy Tips

  • Your child's first visit to the dentist should occur before his/her first birthday.
  • Children should get a regular check-up every six months to prevent expensive and potentially dangerous dental problems.
  • Do not let the first trip to the dentist be in response to an emergency. This can lead to long term fear that can influence the child's oral health decisions for the rest of his/her life.
  • As an infant's first teeth appear, use a soft toothbrush to clean your child's gums.
  • Only use a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste for children under two years of age.
  • Young children over two years of age should use a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste at each brushing.
  • Good adult dental hygiene is important to helping avoid the transmission of cavity-causing bacteria to children through interaction.
  • Never clean pacifiers and utensils with your mouth before giving them to your child as this can spread harmful bacteria.
  • Children who drink primarily bottled water may not be getting enough fluoride.
  • Children should typically be weaned from the bottle around 12-24 months of age.
  • Prevention is the key to reducing expensive emergency procedures later.
